This project is a client-based, design-driven identity design proposal for an interactive microsite prototype. It explores the connection between graphic design, visual design, and user experience (UX). I go beyond functional and syntactic graphic expression to create meaningful and semantic communication. In this project, I embrace experimentation and risk-taking as an integral part of the design process. By incorporating design history, I create a designed form that connects graphic design to visual design for UX and interactions.
Additionally, I focus on the specific design qualities that drive the graphic form. The project encompasses initial framing, insights, and content design to create a comprehensive and engaging experience. I believe that "Visual Design" is an amalgamation of Interaction Design, UI Design, Content Design, and Graphic Design. This microsite provides an opportunity to experiment with the organization's brand while not feeling overly constrained by existing brand guidelines.

Past works

Before starting this project, our team investigated ways to abstract ideas to create different posters and assets using distinct design qualities we learned from Wolfgang Weingart. The letterforms and the strong stair stepped clusters makes it stand out uniquely amongst the rest. This distinct quality it allowed for a system, or identity to be easily transferable across different applications.

Qualities
and Principles

Using the qualities and principles that was derived from Weingart’s design elements, stair stepped clusters were used to highlight the unique shape created by the type that are fitted tightly as well as using it as a graphical element to draw attention to the text. Varying letter spacing and scaling are also used in creating a sense of motion and depth throughout the poster.

3 Investigations

During the second week, we created three lateral “lines” of high fidelity microsite prototypes from three discreet lateral approaches referencing from the posters. During this time frame, I created sketches, wireframes, and mockups to perfect the user flow.

Based on the feedback we received, we decided to move forward with our mostly expressive investigation, as we believe that has the strongest presence as a microsite. As well as combining the unique interactions that strongly relates to the overall visual identity from all three investigations.

-SION
Throughout this project, I reflect on my skills in poster design, Figma prototyping, and identity design. The project drew inspiration from Wolfgang Weingart's design principles, allowing us to explore abstract ideas and create distinct posters with unique design qualities. This unique quality allowed for easy transferability across various applications, forming a cohesive visual identity. As we progressed, I incorporated Weingart's design elements, such as stair-stepped clusters and varying letter spacing, to create motion and depth within the posters. In the following phases, I delved into creating high-fidelity microsite prototypes, perfecting user flows through sketches, wireframes, and mockups. Drawing from feedback, we focused on an expressive investigation that showcased the microsite's strong visual identity and unique interactions. This project exemplifies my ability to merge design principles, explore multiple approaches, and craft cohesive visual experiences.
